October 31st Update

  • Community Update

Good Morning,

This weekend looks very different from other years, so I wanted to send you some important updates and reminders.

Happy Halloween!

No matter how you’re celebrating today, I hope you’re having a happy Halloween! Whether you’re hosting a virtual party or an in-house candy hunt, there are many ways to celebrate Halloween safely this year. Remember that Ottawa Public Health is recommending to not go trick-or-treating this year, but they’ve listed some great alternatives on their Be Social Wise web page. My family and I are keeping up old traditions and creating new ones today. I would love to hear how you and your families are spending today!

Have you gotten tested for COVID-19?

I know that guidelines for when to get tested have changed rapidly and caused some confusion. However, we have seen a drop in the number of people seeking testing and this is concerning as testing is a key factor in reducing the spread. If you’re experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, please don’t wait to get tested as there should be appointments available. You can help keep our community safe. For a full list of symptoms and to book your appointment, visit the Ottawa Public Health COVID-19 Testing Information page.

I understand that testing centres are still not easily accessible for many, especially for residents of Vanier. I can assure you that I am continuing to urge the government to increase resources to municipal health units so that we facilitate access to testing for everyone.

Public Consultation: Interprovincial Crossings Plan

The National Capital Commission is developing a plan to provide a long-term framework to manage the flow of people and goods between Ottawa and Gatineau. To help inform the plan, they are holding public consultations about the long-term vision, principles, objectives, and evaluation criteria. I know that many residents of Ottawa-Vanier are interested in the issue. I encourage you to ensure your feedback is heard! You can answer their online questionnaire any time until November 2nd. Answer the questionnaire here.

Flu Shots

Last week, I asked the Minister of Health for an update on the status of flu shot doses in the province. For many, including myself, it has been difficult to get a flu shot appointment as clinics are running low on supplies. It took me a month to get an appointment and I know that given the difficulty, it might be easier to give up on attempts. The government continues to reiterate that more doses are on the way, so I encourage anyone that has yet to get their flu shot to not give up! For information on where to get the flu vaccine, visit this page. If we all do our part in preventing the flu, we can ensure our health system has the capacity for this second wave of COVID-19. Thank you for your patience and perseverance on this.

Coffee Talk: International Education Recognition

Next Saturday, November 7th at 10 a.m., I’m hosting my second “Coffee with your MPP” event! The recognition of diplomas obtained abroad is an important element in enabling everyone to contribute to the economy. Join me to share your experience and discuss how we can improve the system and support our newcomers. Sign up for the Zoom event at this link!

Have a great weekend!
