Hello,

I hope everyone enjoyed this past long weekend and that those who celebrated had a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

Help for Individuals on the Ontario Disability Support Program

Last week at Queen’s Park, I asked the Minister of Children, Community and Social Services to explain his plans to better support people on the Ontario Disabilities Support Program. COVID-19 has amplified the challenges these individuals have been confronted with and are continuing to face in this second wave. For many on ODSP, getting to testing centres has been difficult from the start when it requires long trips by bus, expensive taxi rides, or limited volunteer transportation. Further, many on ODSP have mobility issues and are often more vulnerable to viruses. The completely insufficient Emergency Benefit that the government provided at the beginning of the pandemic ended months ago. The emergency fund was helpful but was a far cry from what is really needed to support these individuals that rely on the assistance of social services through no fault of their own. Watch my question and the Minister’s response here.

New Restrictions

A reminder that Ottawa is in a modified Stage 2 for at least 28 days. Starting last Saturday, indoor dining, gyms, cinemas, casinos, performing arts venues, and racing venues closed. To learn more about all the new restrictions, consult the news release here.

Support Local Businesses

Having already faced many challenges, this is an extra difficult time for our local businesses. For those of us who can, it is extremely important to support local.

Halloween

I know that many are unsure of what to do for Halloween this year. Ottawa Public Health is recommending to not go trick-or-treating this year, but they have made a list of safer ways to get in the Halloween spirit. You can consult the list on their Be Social Wise page.

Food Banks

Not buying candies or not as many candies? Food banks could use our help. I’ve decided to donate my candy budget towards ending food insecurity in Ontario and supporting our local food banks.

Talk soon,
Lucille
